Yep... If you install a new peice of hardware into your system, you have to re-activate Windows. I usually have to call the number that it gives me and explain that I just installed a new (X). They give me a loooong activation code then. Annoying :?

Yep, this is true. This is their way of knowing what the hardware is that people are using by making a profile of your systems hardware the first time you install XP and associating it to your key code. If you change something big enough in your system, they think you are putting another copy of your single license copy on another computer. This is their way of stopping you. I think it sux that they do it.

Up here there's a snitch line that's been highly advertised lately, that you can call if you are aware of a company using any unlicensed software. They never mention any reward though. Yeah right, like anyone would risk losing his job by turning in his company and having them go broke under the weight of the court costs and fines.

How long has this been going on? I've changed many hardrives, added extra controller card, changed out the cd burner for a dvd burner, added a second dvd burner and I've never experienced anything like whats been discribed here.

I have a video capture card and a new hardrive setting on the floor awaiting instillation. Think their going to give me fits?

ok this really sucks big time i can see ther point when installing windows or updating it in a big way but hardware should have nothing to do with them the big joke about this is i got the puter just before xmas as most of you know i did a post on it then, had it a week or so and took out the dailup modem then about month later added 1 gig of ram,
since then except for usb memory keys and the connection for my digi cam both of which i dont think of as adding new hardware as neither are really installed as such i have done nothing, now next week when i add the usb external drive i will get this shit again probably ohh well guess this is just another joy joy part of owning a windows pc

thx for the help

Hey Dark
I'm running XP Pro ( Site license ). I've changed everything except the processor and I've never run into this.

Was this a "stand alone" pop up window or a pop up from inside IE ?

Another BIG question, do you have Windows Messenger running in the background? I suspect a "spoof" might be going on to steal product license codes from folks that respond. ( just my take on it ).

No mickey its official its part of there not being able to clone windows if it sees "big" changes to hardware it thinks windows was cloned and put onto another machine from what i been told this happends if the changes happen within 120 days so you can only change one thing every 120 days or about 4 months without getting this message a pain in the neck but was pretty easy to do and free phone (toll free for the non uk) so not that bothered just a pain to have to do.
