Stories

"One of the things we're going to be exploring in Season Nine is the origin of the Ancients and the Gatebuilders. And it's something I know fans have been sort of very curious about, and have sort of asked to see. And that is one of the things we're really going to be delving into: Who the Ancients really are, and where they came from, and we may even get a chance to go there."
The writers will also introduce new villains and take the show in a new direction, while still remaining faithful to the show's established mythology. (Executive producer Robert C. Cooper, in an interview with Sci Fi Wire)
"To be honest, a lot of the old stories get wrapped up in the back half of Season Eight. However, in wrapping up these storylines, we've opened up the possibilities of new storylines -- especially so far as Teal'c and Daniel are concerned." (Co-executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, in an interview with Stargate-Project.com)
"Looking ahead, we're going to have our hands full with a whole new villain." "I don't want to give to much away -- but suffice it to say this new enemy would kick the Goa'uld AND Replicators' butts. We're going to have our hands full."
(Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, in a message at GateWorld Forum)
Characters
(Newest information is added to the bottom)
Actress Claudia Black will return for a 5-episode story arc early in Season Nine, GateWorld has learned exclusively from MGM. The actress played the alien woman Vala in Season Eight's "Prometheus Unbound," in which she posed as a super-soldier to hijack the Earth ship Prometheus. Vala hoped to use the ship to bring the survivors from her world -- conquered by the forces of Baal -- to a new home. Black's appearance should coincide with Amanda Tapping's absense early in the season. (GateWorld news report)
"Ben is playing a military guy, a Lieutenant Colonel. And I can't tell you his name yet. It hasn't been legally cleared yet, so it could still change. He's actually played a key role in some major events that went on ... in the Stargate universe and was in fact very instrumental in helping SG-1 succeed in one of their more important missions. And as a result of that, he was given ... his choice posting. And he ultimately chooses to join SG-1. So when he first appears on the show, SG-1 will already know who he is. And we'll see some of those scenes and how he was basically woven into the tapestry of the show through flashbacks." (Executive producer Robert C. Cooper, in an interview with Sci Fi Wire)
Concrete info about Ben Browder's Stargate character have finally arrived: "He's the F-302 pilot (our Earth-designed space fighter) that led the squadron that fought Anubis in Antarctica. ["Lost City, Part 2"] He was badly injured when his fighter crashed, nearly killed -- but was was promised a place on SG-1 if he made it back to fighting form." (Executive producer Brad Wright, in an interview with the Chicago Tribune)
The name of Browder's character is currently being cleared through legal channels before it can be officially announced -- but the producers did let slip to TV Guide that his initials are "M.M."
"[Vala is a] human from another planet, and she's a bit of an enigma. You're not quite sure what her true story is in the episode 'Prometheus Unbound.' She's a bit of a rogue who tells a long story about her planet and her people and her past, and then in the end you're not really quite sure whether it's true or not."
"So she's a bit of a wild card. She's a very sexy character, who isn't afraid to take whatever she wants in any given situation. ... We're going to try very hard to maintain the integrity of that character and still have her sort of join up with the team, but still sort of keep the essence of that wonderful friction that went on between her and Daniel. And I'm sure it'll continue to sort of play out with the rest of the characters as well." (Executive producer Robert C. Cooper, in an interview with Sci Fi Wire)
"No plans for Jonas to come back in the foreseeable future. He has his hands full dealing with domestic and international issues on his homeworld."
(Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, in a message at GateWorld Forum)
Actor Beau Bridges will join the cast of SG-1 in Season Nine as General Hank Landry, who is hand-picked by Jack O'Neill to be the new commander of the S.G.C. when Jack is promoted to head the Department of Homeworld Security. (The fate of General Hammond, who held that position in Season Eight, is yet unknown.) Bridges will be a series regular, and will also cross over to do a few guest appearances on Stargate Atlantis.
(GateWorld news report [MGM / SCI FI press release])
Actor Louis Gossett, Jr. will play a recurring role in SG-1's ninth season, as a Jaffa leader who vies with Teal'c for political control of the new Jaffa nation. The character's name is not yet known.

Ben Browder's new character finally has a name! The SG-1 newcomer will play Lieutenant Colonel Cameron Mitchell in the show's upcoming ninth season.

Miscellaneous
(Newest information is added to the bottom)
Actor Ben Browder will join the regular cast of Stargate SG-1 for the show's ninth season.
Series star Richard Dean Anderson will likely not be a regular on SG-1 for the first time in the show's history. The actor has been reducing his role on the show since Season Six to spend more time with his young daughter in California, but may make guest appearances in Season Nine.
"[Anderson's] character is going to remain very much alive in the Stargate universe. He ... is going to be integral in commanding what goes on at the S.G.C. As to the appearance of Richard Dean Anderson in the series, that's really still undetermined. We are very hopeful that Rick is going to agree to participate in a number of episodes, but I have no idea as to how many or when that will be resolved." (Executive producer Robert C. Cooper, in an interview with Sci Fi Wire)
Actor Michael Shanks ("Daniel Jackson") will return for Stargate SG-1's ninth season, co-executive producer Joseph Mallozzi confirmed to fans at GateWorld Forum. (GateWorld news report)
Actress Amanda Tapping ("Samantha Carter") will appear in 15 of Season Nine's 20 episodes, the actress confirmed in a message on her official Web site. Tapping plans to return to work in May following the mid-March birth of her child, likely missing the first five episodes of the hit show's upcoming season.
"We've been wrapping up storylines since Season Five -- and have yet to run out of ideas. In fact, a lot of the time, finishing up one storyline will open up a host of new possibilities. Nowhere is this more evident than in Season Nine."
(Executive producer Joseph Mallozzi, in a message at GateWorld Forum)
