Hi all, My grandsons computer just got dropped off in my lap for repair. At present I'm stumped. It hangs with a missing/corrupt NTFS.sys file. Move on to restore. At the end of restore satrt up cycles through to the same point and agin hangs :? Won't start in safemode, won't start at last good start or however it was worded. Its just a little Emachine with a funky version of xp home edition. I want to just reformat the entire system hehehe but it's not mine and what little is on there I suppose is important to him. Any help and/or humor much appreciated. Ciao, Skank |

Good luck getting it fixed. If you are booting it and there is a floppy in the floppy drive, you should get a NTLOADER not found error. I hope that wasn't the error. The answer is to eject the floppy. Good luck Fluffy! If I think of another possible issue I'll post it. |

First, have they been doing any hardware upgrades to the pc, or trying to upgrade to NTFS from FAT? Loaded any new games or software. It basically sounds like your screwed. If it is not a hardware problem, then you might replace the file with a known good one...(can send one)....but replacing this file might mess up your file system. I don't know for sure, although it is not a registry file but a driver for ntfs file system. I also found this. You might try it if you can still enter the recovery console from xp cd boot... : 1. Start your computer with the Windows XP CD-ROM in the CD-ROM drive. 2. You are prompted with the following option: To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R When you are prompted with this option, press R to select it. 3. At the command prompt, type the following commands (press ENTER after each command): cd \windows\system32\drivers ren ntfs.sys ntfs.old Note This step renames the corrupted Ntfs.sys file to Ntfs.old. If the Ntfs.sys file is not found, then the file was missing. 4. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER: copy cd:\i386\ntfs.sys drive:\windows\system32\drivers Where cd is the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive that contains the Windows XP CD, and drive is the drive that you installed Windows XP to. 5. Remove the Windows XP CD from your CD-ROM drive, type quit, and then press ENTER to quit the Recovery Console. Reboot. Good Luck. (have fun with this one Max) |
