Thanks for the heads up One. I've been alittle leary of installing it tho because I have no clue what all settings it is gonna mess up with the firewall stuff and all the holes it fixes. I think Herm installed it with no problems so far but have ya run into any difficulties with it?

Anyways.....just curious

seems to be d/loading in the background mate but i think the only issues is with a few games like UT99 & 2K4 but thats just a case of opening the ports they use or you could just turn the M$ firewall off

Sure didn't take them long to find something wrong with it. :? Guess I'll be waiting just a bit longer to see if they throw in some quick fixes for that or redo the SP2 for those problems.

Anyways just saw that and thought everybody might be interested.

I agree, Nameless.
I liked the old Windows Update site. I could choose what I wanted to download and what was trash for me... Now I guess I have to get everything.

Macs are looking better and better every day.

It's over 1 hour and 45 minutes since I posted, and now I'm beginning to wonder if the damn download ever started. I have heard some occaisional disk activity during all this time, but not a lot. I have a high speed connection. Surely I should have finished the download and been able to install by now??

*edit* Well I got pissed off waiting around, and shut down the computer instead of leaving it running all night. Let's see if the download will continue on its own or not.

So like a fool, I downloaded last week. It's been available in a standalone download for a couple of weeks now. It installed fine and wanted a reboot. Did that and guess what, the machine would choke and stop at the initial GUI where it used to say "Windows XP Professional" Sensing this is a bad move, I booted up the Windows XP CD and got into the "recovery mode". There is a document on the microsoft knowledge database that tells you how to do a dirty uninstall of XP SP2 to get you back to a logon. Then there is another application under windows that does the rest of the uninstall. This is all well and good, in my case when I ran the command line uninstall under recovery mode, I could never get to the Window's Logon.. Just prior to the logon screen, the machine would blue screen and give a STOP error and said thatt basically your screwed. Anyways got on the phone to microsoft and spent a pleasant 4 hrs with Brian in Dallas Texas and he was able to get me back to a bootable situation. This allowed me to do a complete backup .

I then flushed my drive and started from scratch.. I then tried to do SP2 before loading any applications and guess what..same thing occured.

So, it you are updating an important computer, backup those critical files (porn files in Mah's case) and set a system recovery restore point. Needless to say, my computer is now using SP1. I did do a upgrade on another computer and it went flawlessly.

:o :o

Thanks for the headsup. I was thinking that perhaps I should do a restore point. Now I definitely will. (If I ever get to download the rest of sp2.)

No problems with the download or running the update on this end. Haven't had any problems, and my normal antivirus program runs without a hitch.

Curious, though. Just exactly how did they incorporate this new electrical burning smell into the update? :?
