Post subject: | What Hard Drive to buy? |
I just got a new hard drive today from tigerdirect turns out I ordered the wrong one. So I will have 85 dollars credit there. I have two in mind Western Digital Caviar 80GB/7200/8mb/ata-100EIDE or a Maxter 80GB/7200/8mb/ata-133EIDE. I called gateway today to find out what type of hard drive I had and they said IDE and I asked if a EIDE would work because that's all I saw listed on tigerdirect and gateway said a EIDE won't work, but the guy I talked to at tigerD said it would work, will a EIDE work?. I have a 1gh amd and 384 mb pc133ram. What speed will work for me the 133 or 100 ata?. The guy at tigerD said the ata 150 was for faster computer's. I have a copy of XP I plan on installing after this because ME just sucks and my 20gig hardrive is maxed. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated thanks :) |

Hey Bud, for a few dollars more, how about this? http://www.newegg.com/app/viewProductDesc.asp?description=22-152-013&depa=1 I LOVE New Egg. You get Free Fed Ex Delivery on most items, and the price is usually lower than most others. BTW, I don't see a reason that an EIDE drive would not work. I don't think it will work at 100 or 133. I'd bet that because of the age of your system, it will have to run at 66. Do you know the model number of your computer (310, 510, etc.) or motherboard make of your system? You may want to consider upgrading your system soon too. Does UT2004 drag it down any? |

Post subject: | Say no to Maxtor |
I have bought nothing but Maxtors and had nothing but trouble with Maxtors for the last several years. That WD drive you posted is the next one I'm getting but mine will be 120GB/7200 RPM/ATA-100/8mb cache. The UDMA rating or ATA as they have it here only counts for burst of information. It will burst at a speed of 133mb like the Maxtor but in less than one second, it will slow to no faster than 100 which is why the Western Digital is plenty. I think all WD drives come with a 3 year warranty if they are 8mb cache drives too. I have two of the Maxtors you mentioned and I hate them. They have BOTH cratered TWICE. That means because of these drives, I have had to rebuild my system 4 times. Clear enough for ya KB? Good luck. I've heard good things about newegg or whatever that thing was that Jarg pointed out. They seem to win the price war constantly. |

Thanks for the reply's guy's. I wont get a Maxtor I have a gateway select 1000 with a hmm american something motherboard gforce 4 ti 4200 64mb upgraded to a 400watt ultra powersupply 2 fans, pci slot duel fan, and just installed a iceber q4 pro vga cooling kit for my gforce. I might as well get a new motherboard at somepoint because almost everything is upgraded but I wouldn't know how to do that. I will be upgrading to xp once i get my new hard drive. Are seagates any good thats what I have now haven't had any problems with it in the 4 years I have had this computer. I wasn't sure if I would screw up anything with the ata speed being to fast. As far as running ut2k4 it seems to run pretty good it lags on some maps but since I replaced the 250watt power supply and the help of the fans I installed I cant complain I would love a faster processer but just spent 1800 bucks on a new guitar head. I could have gotten a sweet computer with that money next tax refund maybe. :D |

This is a take off from another post but it works for everyone almost: I would try to do it for under $600. Keep your old equipment like your: Monitor Keyboard Mouse Floppy CD-ROM Sound Card CD Burner DVD Player Printer Speakers Video Cam Joystick Scanner Video Card Now go out and buy: Totally Sweet Modern Motherboard ($120) Processor AMD 3.0Ghz 400 FSB ($155) DDR RAM 500MB ($150) Nice BIG 7200rpm/8mb cache /ATA 100 HDD ($120) TADA! Now you have by my standards a totally sweet system. I wish I had $550.00 |

I looked all over Gateways site for Select 1000. No luck... Go with the Western Digital, BTW... I have 2. One 120 GB, and one 250 GB. Both work GREAT. Bud asked: Quote: Are seagates any good thats what I have now haven't had any problems with it in the 4 years I have had this computer.
Yes, they have a good rep. I have never owned one, but I have heard nothing but good things about them. Here are some customer reviews of one particular drive http://secure.newegg.com/app/CustratingReview.asp?DEPA=1&item=22-148-022 |

Kind Bud typed: Quote: just half to get a new motherboard
And Processor... For $80, you can get an AMD 2500+. Not bad for a very overclockable proc. BTW, AMD is starting to lock the multipliers on most of their new processors... THAT SUX! |

Seems like most of this stuff is cheap but I have no clue on how to install or assemble either. Can you buy a motherboard with the chip already installed. |

wow those are cheap to think me and my wife spent 1600 bucks on this computer 4 years ago. Seems like it would be easy but if something didnt load up or a dos window all of a sudden sprung up i would be screwd. Im will be saving up for a new motherboard this summer. |

If you get brave, you can do this: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=721893&Sku=B450-4112%20BK&CatId=1218 You have to put it together yourself, but I think it would be a kick ass system. You need to add a hard drive and a video card, and a CD drive, but all in all, it's a good price. Let's see. HD $80 Vid Card $120 CD $50 So for $450, a KILLER system. You can scavage your Gateway to get these parts too. I LOVE this kind of shopping :D I feel like Imelda Marcos in a shoe store  or Schwantz in a porn shop..... BTW, Found this WD hard drive. Save yourself $15. http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=22-144-122&depa=1 |

I change my mind from earlier. I have been sitting here reading reviews about all of the different HDDs out there that were 120GB 7200rpm ata100 8mb cache and here is the one I found to have the best reviews BY FAR! I risk moving away from Maxtor and WD and get this Seagate next time around. I know I'm done with Maxtor already. I read too many complaints about bad WD's and then I got to this Seagate and you should just read for yourself: http://secure.newegg.com/app/Custrating ... 22-148-022 |
