Now that good single disc progressive scan DVD players can be had for $99 on sale at Best Buy; I'm thinking of buying one.

I've known for years that as far as current popular culture goes, I've been way out of the loop for a long time. That's because I haven't been to the movies in at least 15 years.
It so happens that the Canadian "Space Channel" has been running a lot of programs about the making of the original Matrix movie. (I guess they're planning to show it soon.) This was interesting because they showed a scene where a guy named Morpheus tells another guy that he has to "let it all go" just before he jumps across the chasm from one roof top to another. Suddenly I remembered a CTF map Schwantz ran where you heard this Morpheus guy saying that as you fell onto a roof top at the start of the map. THEN I realized that - d'oh! - there's also a DM map called Morpheus! OH I GET IT!

There's been all kinds of these references to recent movies all through UT hasn't there?

So, I'm thinking that I need suggestions on which movies I should buy to play on this thing once I buy it. Rest assured the movie The Matrix is at the top of the list.

My favourite types of movies are: comedies, science fiction, and adventure.

I don't like horror movies, and am so-so about thrillers and mysteries.

What are your suggestions for "must have" movies? :)

Hey Nameless,

Fight Club is a must. Also, Schwantz can burn you some porno DVDs that are must-haves.

Before you buy a nice shiny DVD player, you should check to see if the model you are looking at can be hacked so that it can play any region DVDs, burned "backup" DVDs, etc. Often, the hack is simply puching in the right codes via the remote.

You can look up the model here: http://www.dvdrhelp.com/

Thanks for that link, Mah. :)

Thank you Scify, according to Consumer Reports the latest thinking is that it's ok to buy a DVD player with progressive scan, and if you ever buy an HDTV, then you're ready. ;)

Adventure: Pirates of the Caribbean, and ALL of the Lord of the Rings movies.
Sci Fi: Starship Troopers, Spiderman, and of course, Star Trek TOS on DVD.
Comedies: Finding Nemo, Clerks.
Some of my personal favs....
The Silence of the Lambs series, Braveheart, The Shawshank Redemption, Saving Private Ryan, Pulp Fiction. The Usual Suspects, American Beauty, Se7en (I like Kevin Spacey).

You've probably seen a bunch, if not all of these. Also, if your computer has a DVD read write drive, you can "Back up" these DVDs and burn them.

Just my two cents.

I have a Sony that holds 200 DVD's. Convenient, yes. But the Sony is so damned media sensitive it won’t play many of the VCD's. My kids have the cheapest DVD players that can be bought and will play any piece of bootleg crap on the cheapest of media.
So ya gotta ask your self ya feel lucky. Oh no that was something else. Ya gotta ask your self, you want convenient (and convenient ain't cheap), or ya want bullet proof happy go lucky will play anything bring on the cheapies.

As Skank says, many cheapo DVD players are actually more "convenient" when it comes to playing DVDs from other regions, burned DVDs, recording DVDs to VHS without the macrovision scrambling, etc. I have a Sony like Skank does, and it is so damn proprietary that it refuses to recognize most brands of burned DVDs.

Brands like APEX seem to be the hackers' choice, because they are usually very easy to turn into multi-region players, and very easy to disable macrovision protection on.

You can get a progressive scan Apex for right around $100 I think. Nowadays, they should be able to show cds with Jpeg pictures on them, and even play MP3 cds.
