Ok, it's time for a first impressions thread. Here are mine:

Colours: After being used to the softer pastels of original UT, the first thing you notice is that the colours are a lot brighter, and more garish seeming. They're almost candy like, although the browns and greys seem properly muted.

Textures: Pretty nice! A large improvement over the original UT textures. I love the grasses and the leaves on plants. Lots more 3D textures in this game, although they are not nearly so overt the way that the optional 3D textures are in OpenGL in the original game.

Bots: The AI must have been "improved" a lot. Put them at experienced or higher and they just absolutely take you apart. Lots of spawn/die, spawn/die action. The damned bots are all a bunch of Tamerlanes and Loques now. I've played a number of games at Schwantz's, and if you have 3 humans against 3 bots, or 2 humans and 1 bot against 1 human and two bots, the bots will usually win. (When you hear "Humiliating Defeat" once too often, you really wish you could frag the announcer! )

Vehicles: :D :D Leviathan! Oh yeah! I so wanna try driving that thing with a full complement of fellow players manning the guns! 8)

Ok, what did I miss? Anyone sorry they spent their hard earned money on this game? :?:

Yes, that speech recognition should be interesting. I forgot to turn it on in my game.

One thing I could have mentioned is the need for a compass in ONS maps. Too often I've looked at the little map in the top right corner, and driven off thinking I'm going the right way, then realizing that somehow I'm going off in the opposite direction, all because you didn't know which way you were facing when you started out! :?

LOL, You should try the Sexy Announcer voice. Sounds like she's playing with toys... if you know what I mean

I am glad I did. Happy with the game so far, but I really can't say I like Onslaught to much. I have never been into team gaming. I prefer every person for themselves. I guess it's because I mess up too much and I don't wanna let the team down. :?

I'm not much into the team thing either except in monster hunt and invasion. I still haven't played onslaught though either.

You don't need to worry too much about letting your team down in Onslaught. Once you know what to do, just do your best. The weapons and vehicles have been carefully balanced. Every vehicle has its weak points. The tanks go down fast to all fire, especially Manta and Raptor fire, as does even the Leviathan. It is very vulnerable to air attack and the 5000 health it starts out with is whittled down way fast from the air! If you're good in deathmatch, then when it comes down to 1 on 1 fighting around a power node, you're in good shape. ;)

**********
A large ooopsie on my textures comment. I had them set to normal. By setting them on "highest", I'm getting textures equal to original UT with the extra texture set rendered in OpenGL. ;)

********************
Major quibbles so far:

Bots are too good!

I have to listen to the bot's taunts. Why can't I shut that off like in original UT? :?

Touching a key on my keyboard, any key at all, will randomly bring down the console, unbidden and unwanted, and usually at the wrong moment.

I don't hear them. I have mine set to no auto taunt, just like UT. It is in the options screen under the audio tab. Look for Player Voices.

Depends... What machine do you have now. Give us:
Brand of computer (Dell, HP, Gateway, home built...)
Processor
Ram amount and type (DDR, RDRAM, PC 133 etc.)
Video card with memory
Hard disk size (not too important) and Speed (Important)
Operating system (Aren't you using Win98?)
What else do you use the computer mainly for?
Is the computer you want to upgrade a laptop?

This will help us determine if you still have hope for your system, or if it is hopeless.

Always consider building your own system. It is a rewarding experience.... Frustrating sometimes... but rewarding.

Also, I like having the best tech that I can get, cause I like building new computers. So my answer will be swayed toward getting a new system. Others will be swayed toward keeping and upgrading. I think that the answer lies somewhere in between. For cheap parts, look *HERE*
Mahatma is a tight wad. He will know of other places to look for deals as well.

Does it have to be a laptop? You can build a great desktop machine for less than half of that price. Let me do some razzle dazzle. Before I do, is there anything different over the pond besides power current, that I should know about?

BTW... Your machine is great EXCEPT for the Intel integrated graphics. There in lies your problem. That chipset is not meant to run high spec games like UT 2004. It is just the basic graphics. Would around 3 to 4 hundred pounds be feasable for a good gaming rig?

And another thing. Ya gotta love the new skins and voicepacks! Maybe they're old hat to you guys, but to me it's all new. 8)

I just love two of the female voicepacks. I think its the mercenary and juggernaut packs? Anyway the one that sounds like she has an attitude says "kiss my ass!" so beautifully, and the one that sounds like a dyke says "Life is pain. Get over it!" just so, so, perfectly that you've gotta love it.

The nightmare skin of the Domina character goes so well with that dyke voice, that the faceless lady has morphed into DOMINATRIX, at least for a while. ;)

Also, would you consider building it yourself?
