I got 4.7 a while back, and can't get rid of an earlier version either! :doubt:

Try this.

Then redownload the version you want at Windows update.

Which messenger does it remove? 4.7 or 6.1 or both? I too hate that it logs me in just for turning on my PC. People I don't want to talk to right then always pop up to say hi and waste valuable time.

You can keep the program, but not have it load on startup by removing it from your startup files.
Go to Start button/Run and type in msconfig
Go to the Startup tab.

You should see Msmsgs checked there. Uncheck it, and hit okay. You should check for other resource hogs while you are here, like qttask (Quicktime, Kazaa, etc). You will be prompted to reboot your computer, but you do not need to. When you do reboot, a message will appear on the screen telling you that you are using the Startup configurator something or another. Remember to check the box so that you do not see it every time you boot.
Every time you use Outlook Express, Messenger will pop back up. You may want to consider an alternative, like Eudora.

Another good alternative is mozilla thunderbird; I have read in several places that Eudora has spyware.
