I decided to switch phone companies today because i'm sick of paying 50 dollars a month for what half of it is taxes. So I called verizon and talked to the nice lady and explained my situation Blah, blah, blah and she said you qualify for dsl don't you know. Do i have to say anymore wow.....She said there is a slim chance of me not getting it, but I'll keep my finger's cross..They are sending me out the starter kit.. They said the speed would be 128kbps I don't know if that is good or not but, I take it's better than dial-up....I can't wait to frag.....

Hey Jarg thanks for the help the other night you got me spending some money. I've been looking at 350watt power supply's latley but not sure what a good manufacture would be. I wondered if I might go with a 400watt than a 350 any suggestions?. My vid card recommends 350.

Glad to hear the good news. Err uh, bad news for us.

I would check on those speeds -- 128 kbps is not very good for DSL. Yes, it's faster than dialup, but how much is Verizon charging you for DSL?

If you can get DSL on your line, that means that ANYONE can provide the service to you. I'm pretty sure about this, but someone correct me if I'm wrong.

I would call some of the competitors to see if their monthly rates are as good or better for comparable (or better) speeds. Try Earthlink, SBCYahoo, for starters.

Thanks mah heres what I know so far 1.5mbps, 768mbps downstream........... 1mb download is 60sec/1mb 25sec......I tried earthlink which is what I have now dial-up but don't qualify for there dsl. I hope that doesn't mean I cant get dsl out my way. I checked my number on verizon again and it said I already have dsl so I guess my order went through and everything is good. The lady I chatted with said they have faster dsl at 50 bucks a month but I don't see it offered anywhere on there site maybe it's for business only mine will be 29.95 with free msn. My download speed now is anywhere from 3 to 6kbs per sec urgh!!!!!!!!. Hey I need a ethernet card any suggestions? I have only 3 pci slots left..... I now very little about computer's any help is greatly appreciated thanks

when i first started on cg i was on 128 down 64 up and had quite a good ping, now on 600/128 hasnt improved a great deal but then the comp has had some hiccups in the last few months i cant correct as i need to reload windows to fix them all and cant get the updates from micro$oft (mmm fah moment here) still on 98 so will have to wait till i have enuf money put away to buy a completely new rig
(by the way anything from 150 download and better is called braodband/dsl here in the uk and say that getting better then 2mb is impossible for residential lines better then that is buisness at the appropriate rates in other words small fortune the 600/128 cost me £25 a month sure someone can covert to $ if needed )

Bud, 1.5 Mbits down is more like it. That is worth 29.95/mo. Where did you get the number 128 kbps? That is SLOW! Once you get it installed, go to www.dslreports.com and test the speed of your connection.

I see PCI ethernet cards for free after rebate or $10 all the time at techbargains.com and fatwallet.com. I'll keep an eye out.

I got thoses speeds from verizon maybe I missed read them. I was giving a CNet 100/10Mbps Fast Ethernet Card but it say's it will work only with window's 95/98/nt/2000 I'm stuck with Me. I think the card is pretty old because it came with a floppy. Maybe I can get away with it i'm not sure. I see different speeds listed with some ethernet cards I wasn't sure what speeds to get i'm lost. I hope I can get dsl I checked my order again and that part of the site is not working I'm getting nervous.......

Hang in there buddy. I think any 10/100 nic card will work. Even your old one. I bought two discontinued D-Link cards the other day for $3/ea. and they work great!

Thanks Herm good info, after all this I probably get notified I can't get it. I did a search with my phone# and the results said I was to far away from the Co. 18000 plus feet, than I checked my # on verizon and it said I already had dsl on my line hmm..
