im not sure if i have a static ip if i got a router would that help if i wanted to run a server ? i only have one computer at the moment
but i allways seem to here people talking about routers and such like?

ok i have just found out from btbroadband that i have dynamic ip address so i beleve that means that its not a static one so if i got a router would it make it static?

Even though you are on a high speed connection that doesn't mean you have a static IP. DSL users often do get a static IP assigned to them. A router will just defend you from internet hack attacks and allow you to have more than one PC connected to yor high speed connection at the same time. If you get a router, your ISP will give you a dynamic IP but your router won't ever let it go unless you turn it off for a day or so. This way, it seems like you have a staic IP even though it's dynamic. I have my router on a UPS, so even if I lose power for a short while, it keeps power to the router and my IP doesn't get changed. I have two LinkSys routers. One wireless and on normal. I've heard great things about the D-Link routers and NetGear routers. I'm OK with mine but if I did it all over again, I think I'd go with D-Link Nic cards and router.
