That is the question for those of you who are using it. Seems that my computer problems have reached a point where I am just gonna break down and reformat, and install everything from scratch. I have been running Winblows ME since it's conception, but have been considering the leap to XP. I know about all of the security problems that have cropped up in the recent months. But on the whole, is it worth it, or should I stick with what I already have? How does it hold up with UT? Comments? Suggestions? Questions? Donations? :? |

XP all the way. It rocks and blows ME out the door totally. Tons more functionality and is based on NT instead of 98 like ME is. Solid OS all around. I love it and am considering refusing to support any friends using less than Windows 2000. Once you install it, go straight to the windows update and get all 40+ of them for XP. Is your version legal (XP)? It looks totally different from other Windows OSs but it can be set to look like Windows 2000 which looks like ME and 98. Let us know. |

I thought I was the only poor bastard still running ME!!!!! So Herms, Lets say a guy got his hands on a copy of XP of questinable origin and was supplied a key code/serial number also. Would their be any problems going straight to the windows update and getting all 40+ of the updates? If it where installed would the 182.2 gigs of data on my hardrives be safe? Is the 51.6 gigs I have left on my drives enough for XP? Caio, Skank 8) |

Skank, if that guy got the corporate xp pro version that was floating around, he has to download a key-changer and change the key in xp. Then he can d/l all the updates. |

The answer to question number one is no, you couldn't just go the updates and get all of them. You would be stopped at getting XP service pack one. That is one of the most important downloads so go here and follow these instructions once you have installed XP while not connected to the internet: http://www.tweaktown.com/document.php?d ... 50&dPage=1 Now, after doing this which is actually very simple, you can get all of the updates available. The answer to the second question is yes Fluffy. As usual, I'd say that you need to back that up somehow but if you use XP to upgrade your OS to XP, that info should be safe. I don't like upgrading anything. I think I'd find a way to back up what you need and format your disk with Windows 98 boot disk and then boot the pc with XP in the CD and the CD set as the 2nd boot device after a floppy. Just my opinion. XP can use Fat32 but works better with NTFS and is more secure and capable with NTFS too. |

Mortis i would go for xp too as i am going to as soon as i can well gonna get new pc full stop so dont have a choice of os anyway. But the biggest reason is getting updates win98,98se and 'me' are not supported anymore so if you do wipe and start over were will you get all the updates you need for 'me'? So, I have been checking the sales on Ebay. Should I go with the retail version or will the OEM version suffice? Any problems that getting the OEM version might cause? |
