Anyone out there know what the "Easiest Most Foolproof" wireless system there is for sharing one cable modem with many computers in the house? Any help is greatly appreciated. Best regards, Skank |

I had good experience with Linksys. It is so easy because encryption and such are turned off by default. So, you need to button up once everything works... N6NU |

I've used both Linksys and SMC. Currently using Linksys 802.11 A/B WAP and it works great. NU is right.. get everything working without WEP and (if required) MAC filtering. Once the RF is working good, then button it down.. set up WEP for 128 encryption and if you have sensitive data then maybe use MAC filtering. Remember each security measure adds some overhead to the wireless network. You don't want MAH sitting outside your house with a notebook and stealing your porn. especially if he's naked! About how far should a wireless connection reach? I have a D-Link wireless router that won't make it to a computer 30 feet away. There is a floor between them, but I still think i should get some sort of connection. |

O.K. I went with the Linksys Wireless-G. I'm going out to dinner and to pick a power strip up to plug the damn thing in, wireless HA! Will try setting it up tonight. Any advice? Should I be scared? Pray for me. Does anyone know how many devices this thing can support at one time? Right now it looks like well be setting up 3 towers and 2 lap tops. Damn I hope this will be easy :-( Caio, Skank |

2 Lap tops good to go, no problems. Unbelievably easy. 2 Towers Suck rotten clams, Arrgh..... Install, uninstall, reinstall, install again, did I mention Arrrrrrrrgh...... Keep ending up with Found New Hardware Wizard Cannot Start This Hardware There was a problem Installing This Hardware. Wireless-G PCI Adapter This Device Cannot Start. (Code 10) Click Finish to Start a Troubleshooter that can Help You Resolve the Problem. Dill weeds, you need an internet connection to run Troubleshooter. I made sure I had the latest & greatest drivers from Linksys but to no avail. Any ideas? Anyone else been here done this? Thanks, Skank |

Did you install the drivers before the hardware? Are the wireless cards in the towers the same brand? What OS are you dealing with? XP seems to be good at identifying wireless cards. Quote: Dill weeds, you need an internet connection to run Troubleshooter.
That is quite possibly the stupidest thing I have ever heard.... Good old Microsoft... Glad that they put a lot of thought into this.... |

The Lap Tops had XP Home and the appropriate cards one a linksys the other what ever Dell threw in the box. The Towers both have XP Corp with SP1 installed, both have Linksys WMP54G cards, hardware was installed prior to driver. One was really weird in that the auto install would not run on it. So I copied the downloaded current drivers and placed them on a floppy and installed same. Didn't seem to help. When check the device manager on each system that piece of hardware is flagged with a yellow highlited "!", don't know what that means let alone the mysterious "Code 10" Any ideas? Thanks Skank :( |

Try this. In Device Manager, click on the device and uninstall it. Next go to the Add Hardware Wizard, and see if it can find the device. Found this: Code 10 If the device has a "FailReasonString" value in its hardware key, that string is displayed as the error message. The driver or enumerator places this registry string value there. If there is no "FailReasonString" in the hardware key, the following generic error message is displayed: This device is either not present, not working properly, or does not have all the drivers installed. (Code 10) Try upgrading the device drivers for this device. Solution button: Update Driver To resolve this error code, make sure the device is connected to the computer correctly. For example, make sure all cables are plugged in fully and that all adapter cards are properly seated. Follow the suggested solution button and update the device driver. It may be possible to remove the device and redetect it using the Add New Hardware wizard. http://www.usbman.com/Guides/Error%20Codes%20Explained.htm |

I guess it's too late to suggest SMC!!! Jarg, the signal should be able to pass through walls and floors without much problem. Signal gets blocked by metal and water -- so if your water heater is in between you and your router, you may have a problem. Your body can also a good blocker. |

Whats SMC? :?: Could someone with greater computer knowledge than I (that would be just about anyone) look at this article and advise if this may be the culprit? http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=813707 Thanks gang, Skank |

http://www.smc.com/index.cfm?action=home_page It is possible that the problem you are having is the one in the article. It won't hurt to try downloading the fix. |
