As some of you know, I am on the Atkins diet. I have been on it for almost three weeks. Before I started, I was a whopping 265 lbs.

As of Monday of this week, after two weeks on the diet, I had lost...

23 lbs.

I am sure I am close to 30 now, and still loosing.

If your liver is healthy (and I'm sure not many of your livers are  ) I recommend this diet. I have limited myself to 10 carbs per day. The real limit is 20, but I REALLY want to be thin. I am sick of paying for the blood pressure medicine that I have to take every day. I am not stopping till I hit 199 lbs.

You do not really need the book. Just look at the Atkins web site for information.

Wow, congrats Jarg. I'm a little worried though, but I'm sure you've heard all the worries.

Does that diet include vegetables at all? With what I have heard about that diet, don't you put yourself at risk for heart disease and colon cancer?

30 lbs is pretty dramatic loss, and in a very short period of time. Be careful not to hurt your body in the process of helping it, if that makes sense.

Congrats on the weight loss.....but.....
Speaking from the medical field, you are going to do serious damage to your intestines and colon, as well as vascular damage. As the diet consists mainly of eating meats, you will run the risk of creating blockages in your blood vessels and digestive tract. I am happy for you for the results, but don't stay on it for too long.

Dansinger said his study was one of several that has suggested the high-fat Atkins diet, in the short-term, does not raise the risk of heart disease.

LDL (Low density lipoprotein) cholesterol is the stuff that clogs arteries, while HDL (high density lipoprotein) carries fat out of the blood.

Atkins reduced LDL 8.6 percent and raised HDL by about 15 percent

Any information as to why one should not use the Atkins diet if they have a bad liver? I could never find anything on that.

To answer some questions...

Ahhh. I have fallen for my workmates myths. Many have said that Atkins stresses the liver and can actually do more harm than good. After some research, I have found this:

I have to look at it like this. Being obese is not healthy. My blood pressure has always been high, since I was an adolescent. Heart disease and stroke run in my family. I feel that I have to do something about it, or I will shorten my life by many years.

Mahatma asked:

Before I went on the diet, I ate very little vegies. My diet consisted mainly of bread and pasta. I had it at every meal. If it wasn't pasta, it was rice. Those foods are high in carbs. Now, I eat a salad almost everyday, sometimes twice a day. Ranch dressing has only 1 carb per tablespoon. I actually eat more vegies than I did before. I LOVE spinach, which has only 2-3 carbs per cup.

Chef Trigon asked:

LOL. The one bad side to Atkins is that it can get expensive. I haven't tried the strips yet due to having to buy expensive steaks and such. My boss, who also started the diet uses them. He has lost 14 lbs.

Ok sorry to sound like we were hammering you Jarg. Just worried that's all.

If you are eating vegetables, that is a good thing. What about fruits? I'm guessing No, since the natural sugars in fruits are carbs. However, seeded fruits like berries provide the most fiber.

Aren't there other ways to get high-protein meals other than red meat? What about fish, lean white meat, beans, etc? My dad died of colon cancer, so red meat diets always freak me out a little bit.

I assume that you are talking about anerexia. Believe me, I eat as much now as I ate before. Plus, I take vitamins and drink nutrient shakes. I'm sorry to hear that someone you know took dieting too far. It can be a disease that is hard to stop.

Mahatma asked:

...and your guess would be correct. No fruits except I can have berries if in small quantites.

Quote:

Fish=As much as I can eat.
Lean white meat=All I want
Beans=No
Also, I eat eggs, cheese, any seafood as long as it is not breaded. Tuna and salmon steaks are great when cooked in butter (no margerine).

My grandfather also died from colon cancer. I understand your concern. I personally think that cancer is something that people are genetically coded to get. Of course, lifestyle can accelerate the onset.

One thing to remember: You can use this diet to loose weight for as long as you want. I don't think that two weeks will seriously hurt anyone, and if you can loose 15-20 lbs, then it can't be too bad. After I hit my target, I will gradually increase my carb count until I figure out how many carbs I can have in a day before I start to gain again. Believe me, when I hit 199, I am going to enjoy a slice of pizza and some Chinese food. I just can't over do it.

*EDIT*
BTW, I failed to mention that my blood pressure has decreased by about 5 points. I am at 140 over 81.

sorry jarg like mah didn't mean to sound negative and yes anorexia was one problem in the dieting but not only that there was concerns with vitamins and other things in that category, too much of one not enough of another that caused damage so glad to hear your taking them also had friend, very good friend that turned vegetarian and ended in hospital because they couldn't be told about eating right and taking supplements just reminded me of that with the eating one thing only sorta anyway

I get the impression that there's a list of foods you can have and ones to avoid, but the website wants to sell me things, so it doesn't appear to be saying. :? :(

I think that the diet I've been trying to follow on my own is the exact opposite of the Atkins diet. Can you let me cheat by giving me the list of foods to have and avoid, and the amounts allowed?

Here is a good list of foods that you can eat.

http://www.atkins-diet-plan-guide.com/atkins_foodlist.htm

The 10% list contains foods that do contain carbs, but in moderation, they are okay. I have eaten spinich, peas, and greens and still have had success. I just eat them in moderation.
