Have them come out and test your connection. Make note of when it is out and what the weather is like. My cable underground would short out when it rained but when they came to test it, it would be dry and pass. They can check the modem itself from their office. i would be suspect of the cable since mine has crapped out twice already but I've had the same cable modem for several years.

I have had similar issues with my own cable modem... turns out there is a "process" running in Win XP xalled "WINHOST"... don't ask me what it is or what it does, but if I turn it off through the program manager I have no more problems... It may be a ghetto fix, but so is the pole fan on it's side under my desk, all I can say is it may be ghetto, but it works, it's cheap, and it's easy;-)

If that program is causing you problems, you should be able to disable it using the msconfig utility. I don't have xp, but I think it comes standard for xp, I had to download it for my win 2k.

as for the cable modem, I had one go bad...It kept dropping connection and I would reinitialize it. It then got to the point where I just banged it with my fist and it connected. (hi-tech). Finnally it stopped connecting all together. I then splurged for a Toshiba pcx 2200....and man that thing works great. The only time it drops is when a hit the power cable with my foot and unplug it...lol.

Usually they charge to come out and check your connection. What you might do first is buy a new modem, and call the cable co. to connect it. If it still doesn't work, then return the new modem and have them check your lines.

Bigi,

Please tell me where you got this program for Win2000. I didn't know they made such a thing and would really love to have it.

Herm,

When I first got it, it was kinda hard to find and took some searching, but now it is practically everywhere....with a simple search. To save the trouble, you can download one for win2k and win95 here:

http://www2.whidbey.com/djdenham/Msconfig.htm

ohh, and btw, I just did a bit of reading and it seems the copy I use for win 2k was actually ripped from Xp....so it seems xp does have it standard.

Thanks! Yes, it is part of XP but I've never seen it on or used with WIN2000. Thanks again!
