When I was on 56k my first ISP had me dial up into Toronto. Turned out the servers were in Montreal  So my signal had to go 25 miles to Toronto, then 300 odd miles to Montreal, before it even got out to the web. Gaming sucked.

My next ISP had local dialing, but the servers were in London, Ontario. :? Better, but gaming still sucked. :doubt:

Perhaps the secret to decent 56k gaming is local dialing, and local servers? :?:

I am on a local company, and you know how satisfied I am...

The big companies are a long distance call for me, except AOL. I don't want to go with them.

Good luck.

I'm using Earthlink (signed up with Mindspring back in the day before they merged). some ISPs are better than others, and depends on where you live. even with the same ISP, the quality of server may change over time. ask your neighbors to see what they're using and how good the service is. the quality of your phone line is also very important, and certain modem combinations are known to work better than others.

I am not sure what you mean here. Are you talking about strings, or actual hardware?

very good. I see that you noticed all the names I'm using. the last two probably won't be used again, while the first four are still active. which of those four do you all like?

I'm talking about actual hardware. I think I read that somewhere on the web a long time ago, but I don't remember where that is. I do however have first-hand experience of a name-brand modem working much better than a no-name modem, in the same computer, using the same phone line, and dialing into the same access number.

Maiden Arashi sounds good but I like Clem or the longer version of the same name because then I know exactly who I'm dealing with.

Back when I used a modem(sorry, on cable now), I switched to the "Modem Blaster" brand of 56k modem because of its compatibilty with most Operating systems. I also noticed that I had a faster connection; I blamed it on the fact that it was not a "WinModem"

if you know who Maiden Arashi is, then it shouldn't make a difference. they are all the same person. I haven't used the clemmentine name on the servers for several months now, though I know I will go back to that name at some point in the future. the idea is to give other names their 15 minutes of fame.

yes. avoid winmodems at all costs.
