Post subject: | FTP SERVERS |
I am attempting to setup a local ftp server. I have windows 2000. I installed IIS and set the setting for the ftp under IIS management. I added the user name to my user group. It is set pretty much as default....I have played with the settings and have had several users attempt to access it but can't get on. I am still researching the issue, but I would appreciate any help I could get. The following should be the login, But it gives an error. ftp://bigi@68.169.161.47 If I can get this working....I hope to setup my other pc for map Zip downloads and fast redirects. It is a work in progess and will take several months to complete. Thanks for your advice in advance. |

Are you sure your router/firewall has port 21 open? N6NU |

Hey Bigi, Not sure what kind of connection you are using but just a little word of advice is trying to keep your redirects locally kills your server big time. To better explain I tired this 2 different ways with about the same effect both ways. I tried setting up my server box with the UT server up with a webserver to hand out redirects and when there were ppl playing on the server and somebody new would jump and and have to download......EVERYBODY'S ping went thru the roof. Red flags for days. Well I figured I would try putting the webspace on my player machine to see if it would help out with this problem and the pings were alittle better but the rate the files were being sent were not much better than a dial-up connection. All this using a cable modem with about 2000 down and 350 or so upload. Actually I tried it 3 ways........Death awhile back let me try and put up a webserver on another computer he owns and download speeds were still pretty slow and he has cable also. Anyways just thought I would fill you in on my experiences with redirects. 90% of the reason I am not running a server right now is because of redirects and not wanting to go thru the hassle or cost of having to deal with some sort of webspace. CG and NWRO that I know of both use outside webspace that is paid for and the redirects fly like the bad out of hell. Good luck and hope you figure it out before it starts to drive you mad  |<idcapri |

I am positive the router port 21 is enabled. I do agree that redirects are going to suckup a lot of bandwidth. I wanted to set it up, then I can deal with that....wanted to see what would happen...lol. It would still be good If I wanted to send a friend a large file...I could just throw it in my ftp folder. Such as zipped maps and stuff. The main reason I wanted to set it up is because I don't know how...lol. I didn't know that Win2k Pro supported this....I assumed only the Server edition had IIS on it...so i am curious. About a possible bandwidth solution, I know I can get a second IP from my ISp....I think it is only 5 dollars a month. But, I am not sure if the two ips will be sharing BW or if I get double bandwidth(something I will find out soon). I could either gang the ips and run it to the server and redirect locally, or I could assign one ip to my server box and one to my pc that stores the fast redirects. I was mostly just curious....but now I am determined to find out how...lol Thanks for the input kid. |

I FIXXED IT! Big thanks to XXMan for being my test subject. I had the FTP site set using my ISP assinged wan ip. One would think that would be correct. Turns out...it needs to be assigned my local ip. It works great now. Just for info, I does kill the ping when someone is downloading. It does the same thing when I am downloading from a remote server also. I am going to see If I can mess with it. For now I am just using it to transfer files to my friends and will be watchful when anyone is on my server. Thanks all. |

oh... after I got it working, I disabled it....because it killed the pings of the people on my server. I will only enable it when i plan to transfer a file for now. I am reaseaching the issue on the bandwidth. I currently have a map zip on there that has the 120 maps I added to my server. File Size is 64 mb and takes about 45 minutes to transfer. catch me online and I will enable. I will work on the issue more tomorrow.....tired........ |
