OK, here's something to start the age-old debate again.

I'm getting ready to buy another laptop. I want at least a 15" screen, a mobile processor (doesn't necessarily have to be the centrino Pentium-M), 512 MB Ram, and preferably above 2.0 Ghz.

I ask this seriously: SHould I consider a Mac, and why? Is paying the extra $1500 or so really going to show me rewards down the road? Is performance comparable (like benchmarks etc)?

For the PC crowd: what laptop would you recommend? Anyone here have the Dell Inspiron 1100 or the 5100? How about the Sony Vaio?

Mah,

a friend of mine has the new 17-inch PowerBook (MiniMe's computer :-) ). It is a sweet machine. Apple has done a great job with the industrial design and the new OS-X. However, I do not think I would spend the extra $$$$ on it.

I'll stick with PC's, find plenty of SW and HW just around the corner and get the same job done.

I hope I can ditch MicroCrap one day when Linux is ready for desktop duty. It is pretty close already.

Just my $0.02,

N6

PS: the spellchecker did not suggest to exchange MicraCrap for Microsoft. I guess, it is cool then :-)

Hey Mah,

It seems to me that the demands made of a laptop are vastly different than that of a desktop CPU. Hot rod performance takes a backseat to convenience! The questions you should be asking are: how long does the battery last? How does the keyboard/mousepad "feel"? Is the screen bright enough (daylight glare)? Does it support all the accessories that I need? How expandable is it? Is it quiet enough? Do I really want to learn a new OS and fork out a crapload of extra cash on new software? Will it run UT well enough to beat Deadman Walking on Deck 16? Will my wife leave me now that I can view porn in the bedroom? Can I live with this piece of shit for at least 3 years before I frisbee it out my office window?

Anyway, my bet is that you should avoid cheaping out on this sort of thing, regardless of the OS. Good luck!

Hey Torp:

What makes you think Mah doesn't view porn in his bedroom now? A notebook is not required for that activity. Remember, Mah's spouse spends a lot of time away from Chez Mahatma. I'm sure there are several PVR's, VCR's full of porn waiting in the bedroom closet.

That would be the big point for me... I can not imagine not being able to use the mass of software that I have aquired over the years on a new, high $ computer.

LOL

Just trying to see if I can get a coupon out of NM ...

I keep going back and forth between Torp's rationale (spend the cash, go for lighter, faster, reliable) and my wallet (get a PC notebook for around $1000).

It's a hard habit to break (poverty, that is).

Had to share this with all of you. The Mac folks will be shakin their heads, but for the rest of us poor folk, this notebook deal is pretty darn good. I actually got a few more bells and whistles than the deal I list below, but my price is just a little bit more than $1100.

I ordered a Dell Inspiron 600m 1.3GHz Centrino with DVD BURNER -- $935+tax AC/AC/AR/AFWCB! Here's how to order:

Using the portal through Fat Wallet (in order to get 3% cash back), go to Dell SMB --> Notebooks --> Inspiron --> 600m Featured Systems --> Customize the $1149 version

1. Upgrade to the DVD Burner for $249 (Or as an alternative, pick any combination of upgrades that will get the config at $1499 or more....
2. Choose the FREE 512MB RAM Upgrade (Note that some members have pointed out that Dell's promo wording says either RAM or Rebate, not both, but both show up in the cart and thus should be valid. If you're concerned about the rebate being invalidated by the RAM upgrade, stick with 256MB and upgrade yourself. The Dell part number for their 256MB RAM Module for the 600m is A0098270. This will add $33 or so to your total if you go this route.)
3. Check the Box for the $150 Rebate
4. Check Musicmatch and Picture Studio if you want them.
5. Continue... Continue... Add to Cart...

Subtotal as above is $1548

6. Apply 15% off all Inspirons $1499 or more: 17AF8E48BFD Expires 6/18/03

7. Apply 15% off total SMB Order that you got in email or search for a coupon code in one of the shopping forums

8. These 2 discounts should subtract $232.20 and $197.37 respectively, bringing your subtotal to $1,118.43

9. Take off 3% of that for FWCB. Or $33.55. We're down to $1,084.88

Send in the $150 Rebate and you're down to $934.88 + tax
