Tonight is the second night of fighting like hell with this stupid ASUS board and finally Ifigured the problem. It wasn't overheating as I thought but rather both sticks of ram were bad. 1 was obvious because the PC would not boot with it by itself in there ever. The other booted but the system would lock. I got some tested good ram and BINGO, I'm in. I just finished installing and patching XP Pro on it. I'm on it as I type this. It seems to run very smooth so far but I prefer my ABIT KT7A to this by a long shot. ABIT is much more simple to use or at least it used to be. I have big plans for this box in the future!

If Apple had any brains they'd have had a company like Dell or Gateway build and sell their computers. With their mass marketing ability to sell discounted computers in very high volume, they would make the one button mouse have legions of fans.
I'm sure those control freaks at Apple could sign a deal where they specify the standards and get to rigidly enforce them. In fact, I'm surprised it hasn't happened this way already. Maybe Apple likes thinking and being small? :o

Funny how how misspelled school. I didn't notice until I looked at the quote in FAH's post. Jarg, you don't want any of these PC's they are usually way behind the time but at least they work and are free to the families. Consider this, until this batch, the best I've ever given away was a PII 333. I gave out about three of those. All of the rest have been Pentium I style and less like 486's.

FAH, spread the disease huh? Good one. Still the only thing worse than having a PC is not having one. Nameless, I'm amazed you bit at that so fast. Haven't you been reading here lately? FAH is on the popularity come-back trail since Max is getting older and tired of the argument. Even Vette who may still be young has truly softened up lately. It's like they are related or something. Maybe in-laws? That might explain the hostility.

Last note: if you type in jarg and then spell check it on this forum, it recommends you correct jarg with jerk! LOL

I don't think they like being small. But at least that way they can claim to be "boutique."

Analogy #2: Three or four large, not so bright students looking over the shoulder of the smaller, brighter student in class in order to get the right answers.

Well, I don't know about a Mercedes-Hyundai merger, but what about Daimler-Chrysler?

And speaking of motorcycles, back in the late '80's Suzuki tried the concept of converting all of their dealerships into motorcycle "boutiques" to woo the yuppie crowd. It failed miserably. Now they're trying to bring the flawed idea back again.
With the rehiring of Steve Jobs to Apple, it kind of smacks of the same thing.

How's that for a computer/motorcycle analogy?

If chrysler's products were as flawed as microsofts products I'd have to agree with your ananlogy. But they're not and I don't. Not only that but Mercedes vehicles are still made by Mercedes employess in Mercedes factories so that analogy doesn't work.

Computergeeks & gearheads are two different animals. So what was your point with Suzuki. Most yuppies use computers. Very few yuppies have motorcycles. Makes a hell of a lot more sense for Apple to go for the yuppie crowd then a motorcycle company.

So the Apple store is doomed to failure. Man I wish I had a failure like that. I'd be able to retire with a boatload of cash and my kids and grandchildren wouldn't have to work a day in their lives. Go to the nearest Apple store on a weekend and then come back here and tell me it's failing.

Geee. The nearest Apple store to me would have to be well over 100 miles away..... And that is really a CompUSA. I suppose that Atlanta would have an Apple store... Sounds like it would take me all weekend to get there.

I think Nameless is right about the Dell or Gateway mass marketing approach. Make the computers more accessable to the people of the world, and watch the folks flock to Apple's side. Otherwise, they will always be "boutique".
I would like to compare the number of Apple computers sold versus the number of Alienware computers sold. Both are considered "boutique". Sounds interesting.

Speaking of "boutique" computer companies, Check this out. BRING LOTS OF CASH!!

Well, I am a die-hard PC user but I really wish I could afford one of those slick Notebooks from Apple.

N6

PS: Apple is my single largest customer - long live Apple :-)

Cool looking PC. Ugh did I just say that. Too bad 64 bit technology is a waste. Or so I heard after Apple started putting it in their g5's last year.
